About Us

Our Mission Statement

Buena Vista Seventh-day Adventist School exists to lead each of its children into a close and saving relationship with Jesus Christ. Through His grace we seek to prepare them mentally, physically, and spiritually for a place in His service.
We treasure each child who enters here as a gift of God.

Our Philosophy

Buena Vista Seventh-day Adventist School is operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church to provide a spiritually oriented education for children. A belief in the existence of the Creator God is fundamental in the philosophy of Seventh-day Adventist schools. We respect His divine authority and recognize His intervention in human affairs. We believe that true education develops the spiritual, mental, and physical powers of each student; preparing them for the joy of service in this life and for the higher joy of service in the life to come. To achieve this goal, we encourage each student to:
  • develop a personal relationship with God and his fellow men as stated in John 2:52
  • master the basic academic skills
  • value labor, physical and mental, as the blessing God intended
  • cultivate physical fitness, mental ability, and moral purity.
The Buena Vista Seventh-day Adventist School is operated in harmony with the guidance and direction of the Office of Education, North American Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Episode 1: Intellectual Curiosity

“Amber Nelson, 1st grade teacher: “One of the things that’s really powerful in the life of a young person is their curiosity. Giving them the opportunity to do hands on learning, to actually discover, allows children to build their understanding of the world that they live in. This process is an integral component of an education at Buena Vista.”

Episode 2: Emotional Well-being

Hazel Byeon: “I think it starts with knowing the kids, knowing them well, like their needs, their personalities and how their minds work. I have students that have ADHD, anxiety, issues with focusing but in my classroom, they are able to express their needs such as “I have a hard time sitting still” so giving them options to release their energy is a healthy way to meet their needs. We have a good team including the administrators and other emotional/learning support. I think by respecting the student’s needs, and if they’re having a hard time, really listening to them, understanding who they are, allows us to differentiate instruction for them.”

Episode 3: Spiritual Growth

5th grade teacher Jacqueline Padilla: “Spiritual growth is so important for my students because I need them to know that they are important, that they have beautiful strengths and talents that God has given to them, that they are a vital part of the community. I always teach them that they can use their talents to help other people, this community and this classroom. We learn many skills and we learn a lot about the Bible and it’s not just about our classroom but also beyond our doors. I want them to share their love of Jesus, what they’re learning and to use their skills and talents to help other people.”

Episode 4 Why I Teach

Vicki Rutherford, 7th grade teacher: The other day I was driving to school and I thought to myself, “There’s no place I would rather be then coming to BV and walking into my classroom and sharing the love of Jesus with my kids.

I just want parents to know that these times we are living in are very difficult and hard. We’re seeing the world have such a strong influence on our kids, especially at the Jr. High level. It’s great to put them in our school at that level, but the best thing you can do for your kids is to start them out right here at church school. Get them in, get them in school, get them loving the stories about Jesus, loving prayer, being free to sing about Him every morning and all day long; just get them in school at Buena Vista.
